Democratic Women’s Caucus Chair: Women Can’t Afford the Republican Budget
WASHINGTON, D.C. —Yesterday, Tuesday, February 25, Republicans passed a budget resolution with more than $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid that will destroy programs that support women and families. They are cutting health care and nutrition for women and children so that they can give $4.5 trillion in tax breaks to billionaire donors and big corporations.
Democratic Women’s Caucus Chair Teresa Leger Fernández (NM-03) issued the following statement:
“Republicans told us who they stand with in the budget they passed. They don’t stand with their voters, the women, moms, grandmothers, or children in our communities. They stand with the billionaires.
Republicans’ cuts to Medicaid and SNAP will take money directly out of women’s pockets to give huge tax breaks to billionaire donors and big corporations. Medicaid and SNAP help women and families of all political beliefs, in every community across America. Without these programs, women will have to pay more money—often money they do not have—for care, for food, and to make ends meet. Women cannot afford the Republican budget.
Medicaid provides health care for nearly 80 million Americans and covers every stage of life from 40% of America’s births to nursing home care and everything in between. SNAP keeps over 13 million of America’s children fed and healthy. When these programs are slashed, the costs get passed on to women and families.
Women cannot afford the Republican budget.
Every community will be impacted by these cuts. Find out the impacts on the community and whether your Congressperson is fighting back on our website. The Democratic Women’s Caucus will not stand by while Republicans make life harder for women and families to line the pockets of billionaires.”
