Democratic Women’s Caucus Releases Statement Memorializing Labor and Civil Rights Leader Dolores Huerta

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) Chairwoman Teresa Leger Fernández (NM-03) released the following statement in memory of labor activist and civil rights leader Dolores Huerta, who passed away today at the age of 96. Her lifelong activism and commitment inspired presidents, world leaders, and generations of women. DWC is with her and her family today as they navigate this tragic loss and work to continue her transformative legacy.

“At a time when women were often considered just support staff, Dolores Huerta led. She organized, strategized, and negotiated some of the biggest accomplishments of the United Farm Workers. She inspired many members of the DWC. She was not only a hero for her work, but also for her joy. She believed in the rights of workers, the dignity of immigrants, and the power of organizing to make change.

When she successfully advocated for the Agricultural Labor Relations Act and peacefully organized some of our country’s most prominent protests, she showed that ‘the people have the power.’ Even when she faced violence herself, Dolores Huerta never quit. Her enduring legacy will carry on in DWC members who looked up to her and were taught by her to lead.

Today, we are mourning the loss of one of America’s greatest organizers and activists. Her footsteps will echo in every march, her spirit will live in every movement, and her words will carry us forward.”
