WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Monday, February 23, Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) Chair Teresa Leger Fernández (NM-03) and DWC member Lori Trahan (MA-03) released the following statement after a viral video showed President Trump mocking the gold medal winning USA Women’s Hockey Team: “The women of Team USA inspired and awed us with their record-breaking performance at the Olympics, including the gold medal winning USA Women’s Hockey Team. Instead of offering his congratulations, the President made demeaning and unacceptable comments about the Women’s Hockey Team—further proof of this administration's complete disrespect for women. It is absolutely shameful. As leaders of the Democratic Women’s Caucus, we would like to formally and proudly invite the USA Women’s Hockey Team, as well as all of the women on Team USA, to the United States Capitol to celebrate their achievements and show our appreciation for their incredible representation of our country on the world stage—something the President could learn from.” Background: For the third consecutive Winter Games, U.S. women won a record number of gold medals, leading Team USA to win the second most medals of any country. The Democratic Women’s Caucus has long fought for the rights and fair treatment of women athletes and to protect Title IX and the opportunities it affords for women.
