DWC Chair Commends House Passage of Bill to Restore ACA Tax Credits; Lower Costs for Women and Families

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Thursday, January 8, Democratic Women’s Caucus Chair Teresa Leger Fernández (NM-03) released the following statement on the passage of the bill to restore Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits and lower health care costs for women and families:

“Today’s vote to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits should have happened months ago. Democrats, including the Democratic Women’s Caucus, forced this vote and we are now sending the Senate a three year extension to help millions of women and families across the country afford care. Women make the health care decisions for their families, and no woman should ever have to choose between food, heat, housing, or health care. We thank the 17 Republicans in the House who joined us to make health care more affordable for the women and families in their communities, and we urge their Senate counterparts to do the same. Last year, Senate Republicans passed permanent tax credits for billionaires and the biggest corporations. Now, it’s time for them to reinstate these health care tax credits for working families and small businesses.”

Background: This afternoon, the House of Representatives passed H.Res.780 the vehicle for Democratic Leader Jeffries’ Discharge Petition to force a vote to restore the ACA enhanced premium tax credits. Speaker Johnson let the ACA tax credits expire on January 1, 2025 by failing to hold a vote on any legislative solution to help women and families access affordable health care. The ACA tax credits help millions of women afford health care through the ACA marketplace.
