Democratic Women’s Caucus Chair Honors Extraordinary Legacy of Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Thursday, November 6, Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) Chair Teresa Leger Fernández (NM-03), released the following statement on the news of Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi’s (CA-11) upcoming retirement from her iconic career in Congress.

“Speaker Emerita Pelosi, the first woman Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and the most effective Speaker in history, continues to build a legacy as a trailblazer and an unparalleled advocate for women and children. Her legislative wins in Congress, including giving millions access to care through the Affordable Care Act, expanding the Child Tax Credit, and championing the American Rescue Plan, made life better and more affordable for America’s women and families.

Speaker Emerita Pelosi also spends extensive time investing in and empowering women in politics, serving as a mentor and guide to all of us in the Democratic Women’s Caucus. As we enter Congress, she asks each of us, ‘What is your why? What is the passion and purpose for which you have chosen to serve?’ The Speaker explains she has three whys: ‘The children, the children, the children.’ Everything she does—including her work as a brilliant strategist, negotiator, compassionate world leader, and role model for women across the world—revolves around these three ‘whys.’ It makes sense, for our children represent our future, and we must protect a future of possibility, one where health care, education, and a livable planet exist so our children can reach their full potential.

We will forever be changed by her legacy and her leadership, and are eternally grateful for her impact. In her honor and for our future, we will continue her fight for the children.”
