Today, Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) Co-Chairs Congresswomen Lois Frankel (FL-21), Brenda Lawrence (MI-14), and Jackie Speier (CA-14), and Vice Chairs Congresswomen Veronica Escobar (TX-16) and Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) issued the following statement after President Joe Biden signed into law their legislation to honor U.S. Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg with statues on U.S. Capitol Grounds into law.
"We are thrilled that President Biden signed our legislation to honor the legacies of Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg with statues in their honor on the U.S. Capitol Grounds—it’s an exciting day for children who dream of following in the footsteps of these legal giants," said the Members. "Justices O'Connor and Ginsburg broke the highest and hardest glass ceiling in our judiciary, becoming the first two women to sit on the Supreme Court after persisting through decades of gender-based discrimination in their academic and professional careers. These statues will serve as inspiration to future generations of children from across the country and around the world who pass through the halls of Congress."
In honor of Justice O’Connor and Ginsburg trailblazing legacies, the legislation also urges the Joint Committee of Congress on the Library to consider selecting an artist from underrepresented demographic groups to create the statues.
The Senate companion bill was championed by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ). Rep. Frankel co-sponsored the House bill with other DWC Co-Chairs, Jackie Speier (CA-14) and Brenda Lawrence (MI-14), DWC Vice Chairs Veronica Escobar (TX-16) and Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) and Bipartisan Women’s Caucus Co-Chairs Congresswomen Madeleine Dean (D-PA) and Jenniffer González-Colón (R-PR).
