Today, Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) Co-Chairs Congresswomen Brenda Lawrence (MI-14), Jackie Speier (CA-14), and Lois Frankel (FL-21), and Vice Chairs Congresswomen Veronica Escobar (TX-16) and Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) issued the following statement on legislation that would honor the legacy of late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
“One year ago, the nation mourned the heartbreaking loss of feminist icon Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg,” said the Members. “Justice Ginsburg spent her career devoted to advancing the fight for gender equality and cementing the precedent that all men and women are equal under the Constitution. The legacy left by her landmark opinions and dissents are at the very core of the causes that we fight for every day. We can think of no better way to recognize Justice Ginsburg’s pursuit of justice than by passing legislation that would place statues of the first two women Supreme Court Justices in the Capitol in honor of their service and dedication to our country. We hope the House will soon take up this legislation so that generations to come will be able to view their statues alongside so many other pivotal figures in our nation’s history.”
H.R. 4814 would obtain and direct the placement in the Capitol or on the Capitol Grounds of a statue to honor Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Sandra Day O'Connor and a statue to honor Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Ruth Bader Ginsburg. H.R. 4814 was introduced in the House of Representatives on July 29, 2021 by members of the DWC and Bipartisan Women’s Caucus. The legislation was referred to the House Committee on House Administration and has a companion bill in the Senate offered by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK).
