WASHINGTON, D.C. —Today, Tuesday, January 28, 2025 Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) Chair Teresa Leger Fernández (NM-03) released the following statement slamming President Trump’s move to immediately freeze federal funding set to go to states, families, and communities in every part of the country.
“Trump’s funding freeze is an outright attack on women and families and the latest move in his anti-family agenda. It is not only illegal, but it would have real consequences that real people in every corner of the country would feel in their homes, schools, and communities.
- Children who rely on school meals and babies whose Moms feed them through food assistance would go hungry.
- Domestic violence and sexual assault survivors would lose access to safe shelter, protection, and support.
- Students with disabilities and in low-income classrooms would lose academic support.
- Low income women and families would lose access to child care subsidies that allow them to stay in the workforce.
- Elderly and disabled women who rely on rental assistance or affordable housing units could go homeless.
- Millions of women who rely on community health centers for care wouldn’t be able to access prescriptions, checkups, or care.
- Patients with terminal diseases including cancer who are desperate for a cure would see lifesaving clinical trials and research funding cease.
- Veterans could lose well-earned housing, nursing home, transportation, and food security benefits.
Republicans claim to care about protecting women, but freezing this critical funding would unquestionably make women and families' lives harder. Trump callously caused fear and worry across America to carry out Project 2025 which sets up tax credits for his billionaire bros. A federal court enjoined the stealing of federal resources for now, but we will keep calling out Trump’s betrayal. In addition to that stay, we will explore every option to fight back and defend America’s women and families.
To the millions of women and families impacted by Trump’s cruel act: We see you, we hear you and we will fight like hell for you.”
