On International Women’s Day, Democratic Women’s Caucus Chair Slams Trump’s Attacks; ‘They Can’t Erase Us’
WASHINGTON, D.C. —Today, Saturday March 8, International Women’s Day, Democratic Women’s Caucus Chair Teresa Leger Fernández (NM-03) released the following statement:
“International Women’s Day is traditionally a celebration of the world’s women and a day to recommit to advocating for women’s rights. Today, we’re engaged in an all out fight for our economic security, health, and safety. At this week’s Joint Address, President Trump lied to the American people. He covered up DOGE’s indiscriminate firings of federal workers, the increased costs women will face due to his tariffs, and his plans to slash Social Security and Medicaid among other atrocities. Trump lied to our faces saying he is ‘protecting women’ while taking every opportunity to attack women and girls.
Just this week Trump’s Department of Justice dropped a case to protect women who need emergency abortion care to save their lives. Millions of women and children are losing access to food, health care, and gender-based violence prevention programs because of Trump and Elon Musk. Millions more could lose access to health care due to the $880 billion in Medicaid cuts in the House Republicans’ budget.
Instead of honoring women’s history this month, President Trump and Republicans are trying to take women back to a moment in history before we had equal protections under the law, access to proper health care, or voting rights. Trump even tried to prevent federal employees from commemorating Women’s History Month at all. Groveling to Trump, companies have erased this day from their calendars.
To all women, remember: They can’t erase us. We are half the population, and we will be heard. We will stand united and resist.
In the face of hatred, we are continuing to fight for women every day by challenging Trump and his administration in court, channeling public outrage, and calling out every attack on women. Despite the challenges, we are fighting and are hopeful, in large part because of the strength and perseverance of the dedicated women in every community fighting for a better future.
As many women gather in protest across the world, we are right there with you. We see you, we hear you, we are you and will always fight alongside you. On International Women’s Day and beyond.”
