Washington, D.C. – Today, Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) Co-Chairs Congresswomen Jackie Speier (CA-14), Lois Frankel (FL-21), and Brenda Lawrence (MI-14), and Vice Chairs Congresswomen Veronica Escobar (TX-16) and Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team’s $24 million equal pay lawsuit settlement.
“Today’s settlement is a turning point in the fight for equal pay for equal work and would not have been possible were it not for the strength and resolve of the US Women’s National Soccer Team in shining the spotlight of truth on the ugly reality of gender discrimination,” said the Members. “This historic victory paves the way for greater equity in U.S. Soccer and inspires us to continue the fight to ensure current and future generations of women can succeed on and off the field. We reaffirm our commitment to passing the Even Playing Field Act to ensure all men’s and women’s national teams receive equal pay and resources in their respective sports.”
In June of 2021, DWC leadership reintroduced H.R.4163, the Even Playing Field Act, which would ensure equal pay, investment, and working conditions for all U.S national team athletes, coaches, and other personnel. You may read more about H.R. 4163 here.
