Washington, D.C. –  Today, Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) Co-Chairs Congresswomen Jackie Speier (CA-14), Lois Frankel (FL-21), and Brenda Lawrence (MI-14), and Vice Chairs Congresswomen Veronica Escobar (TX-16) and Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) issued the following statement on the one-year anniversary of the January 6th insurrection on the Capitol.

“Today, we mark one year since the unthinkable assault on our republic and on the legitimacy of our democracy—an attack that we cannot let get whitewashed or rewritten,” said the Members. “As pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol with weapons and vandalized Member offices, they injured and killed Capitol police officers, inflicted trauma on Members, staff, and press, and put our democracy on the brink of catastrophe. We returned to the Capitol that same night to ensure the peaceful transition of power, which 147 Republicans refused to uphold mere hours after the death and destruction of that day. The assault on democracy continues as 19 states have passed laws making it harder to vote and Republicans continue to peddle the Big Lie. As we work to heal our nation and protect our democracy, we must all do our part to ensure that such an assault cannot ever happen again.”
