Washington, D.C. – Today, Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) Co-Chairs Congresswomen Brenda Lawrence (MI-14), Jackie Speier (CA-14), Lois Frankel (FL-21), and Vice Chairs Congresswomen Veronica Escobar (TX-16) and Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) issued the following statement on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s announcement that paid family and medical leave will be included in the House Build Back Better legislation.
“Including paid family and medical leave in the Build Back Better Act has been a priority of the Democratic Women’s Caucus since Day One. We should not ask workers to choose between a paycheck and their own health or the health of family members,” said the Members. “Paid family and medical leave is there for a baby’s first breath, to a family member’s last. It’s also critical to ensuring millions of women can address their care needs and return to the workforce, adding billions of dollars to our economy. We are thrilled by the Speaker’s announcement that paid leave will be included in the House Build Back Better legislation and thank the Speaker and Ways and Means Chairman Richie Neal for their continued leadership and for advancing this crucial investment in women and families.
