Democratic Women’s Caucus Statement on House Passage of Legislation to Honor Supreme Court Justices Ginsburg and O’Connor

Washington, D.C.Today, Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) Co-Chairs Congresswomen Lois Frankel (FL-21), Brenda Lawrence (MI-14), and Jackie Speier (CA-14), and Vice Chairs Congresswomen Veronica Escobar (TX-16) and Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) issued the following statement after their legislation to honor U.S. Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg with statues on U.S. Capitol Grounds passed the House of Representatives. 
 
“We are thrilled that the House passed our bill to celebrate the legacies of Justices Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg by establishing statues in their honor on Capitol Grounds,” said the Members. “Justices O’Connor and Ginsburg’s historic confirmations to the Supreme Court, and their decades of service, changed the way our nation viewed our justice system and paved the way for more women to follow in their footsteps. These statues will inspire millions of children who tour our Capitol, and we look forward to seeing them completed.”
 
In honor of Justice O’Connor and Ginsburg trailblazing legacies, the legislation also urges the Joint Committee of Congress on the Library to consider selecting an artist from underrepresented demographic groups to construct create the statues.
 
The legislation passed the House by a vote of 349 to 63 and the Senate on December 12, 2021. The bill now goes to President Joe Biden’s desk to be signed into law.
