Washington, D.C. – Today, Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) Co-Chairs Congresswomen Brenda Lawrence (MI-14), Jackie Speier (CA-14), and Lois Frankel (FL-21), and Vice Chairs Congresswomen Veronica Escobar (TX-16) and Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) issued the following statement on the Build Back Better Framework.
“Democrats in Congress and the Biden-Harris Administration made history with these commitments to transformational investments in women and families that will make our economy stronger than ever before. President Biden’s Build Back Better framework delivers on many of the most important promises for our care economy, including groundbreaking investments in child care and home care, that will also raise the wages of workers, an expansion of maternal health programs, and the extension of the new Child Tax Credit,” said the Members. “Since Day One, the Democratic Women’s Caucus has been pushing to Build Back Better with women so that children get the nurturing and education they need and deserve, care workers are paid the wages they need and deserve, and our loved ones are cared for as they need and deserve. Women’s labor force participation is at its lowest levels since the 1980s. We need to offer the 1.6 million women forced to leave the workforce because of lack of child care a pathway back to work. We need to invest in our children. Right now, only about 50 percent of American kids are in preschool. Giving them the head start they deserve will be life changing, for them and for our country. We will also, for the first time, finally pay a living wage for the hard work that women, especially women of color, have done for generations taking care of families. This is a huge win for working families, children, and our aging loved ones, and we look forward to building on these victories as we continue to Build Back Better.”
