WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Democratic Women’s Caucus Chair Lois Frankel and ERA Caucus Co-Chairs Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley and Cori Bush led DWC and ERA Caucus members in marching to the Senate chamber to demand passage of S.J.Res. 4, a resolution to remove the arbitrary deadline for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment and positively affirm that the 38-state threshold needed has been met.
Despite overwhelming support for the ERA across the country, Senate Republicans voted overwhelmingly to filibuster—and did not even allow debate on the resolution. The final vote was 51-47.
In response to the vote, DWC Chair Frankel released the following statement:
"Today at the Senate, the Democratic Women's Caucus demanded passage of the Equal Rights Amendment—now. And it's about time,” said Chair Lois Frankel. “Women across the country have marched, fought, and voted to enshrine gender equality in our United States Constitution once and for all. You better believe they were watching the Senate vote today. And despite some Senate Republicans refusing to stand with women, we’re not going to back down—we’re going to fight harder.
“The Democratic Women’s Caucus stands with women across the country to make clear: we will never stop fighting until women are fully equal under the law and in our Constitution.”
