Washington, D.C. – Today, Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) Co-Chairs Congresswomen Jackie Speier (CA-14), Lois Frankel (FL-21), Brenda Lawrence (MI-14), Vice Chairs Congresswomen Veronica Escobar (TX-16), Sylvia Garcia (TX-29), Freshman Representative Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (CA-53), and Whip Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) released the following statement on DWC Members and Members of Congress participating in a peaceful demonstration to protest the suffering inflicted by an extreme Republican agenda that has stripped away a person’s right to make their own reproductive health decisions.
“In recent weeks, we bore witness to the pain, suffering, and complete upheaval that the Supreme Court unleashed in overturning Roe v. Wade. Democrats in the House just voted a second time to codify the right to abortion. Not one Republican changed their vote and supported the Women’s Health Protection Act, and only three Republican Members joined us in passing the Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act.
“This extreme Republican agenda has harmed pregnant people and their loved ones and threatens to criminalize birth control, in-vitro fertilization and post-miscarriage care.
“Today, Members of Congress marched in defense of reproductive rights and in solidarity with all people affected by the Supreme Court ruling and by extreme Republicans across the country who seek to punish and control women.
“We have come too far to allow that, today in America, women have less freedom than their mothers. We will not be silenced, and we will keep working until all people are guaranteed equal rights and access to the health care they need to make their own decisions about their lives and futures.”
