Washington, D.C.Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) Co-Chairs Congresswomen Jackie Speier (CA-14), Lois Frankel (FL-21), Brenda Lawrence (MI-14), and Vice Chairs Congresswomen Veronica Escobar (TX-16) and Sylvia Garcia (TX-29), issued the following statement in response to recent news reports of a police officer not being criminally charged despite evidence he groped a 17-year-old girl in his custody.

“The fact that a Florida police officer was fired for groping a 17-year-old girl and won’t face charges flies in the face of common decency and justice,” the Members said. “Cases like these are exactly why we in the DWC fought so hard to pass the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization Act, which included our bipartisan bill making it a crime for federal law enforcement officers to engage in sexual acts with someone in their custody. It also authorizes grants for states with similar laws. Simply put, there can be no consent when one person is exercising the power of law enforcement and the other is handcuffed or in custody. In the name of justice and to restore public trust, we urge state and local authorities to take the necessary action of holding Bobby Lubrido legally accountable.”
