Dem Women’s Caucus Leadership Condemns GOP Funding Bills, Urges Speaker McCarthy and House Republicans to Work with Dems to Avoid a Government Shutdown

September 29, 2023

Washington D.C. – Today, Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) Chair Lois Frankel and Vice Chairs Nikema Williams and Teresa Leger Fernández issued the following statement condemning the House Republican funding bills and urging Speaker McCarthy and House Republicans to pursue a bipartisan solution to avert a government shutdown.

“This week, House Republican leadership caved to extreme members of their party—and in the process betrayed women and families across the country.

“These funding bills aren’t just cruel and extreme, they’re also not a serious attempt to keep the government open—and they have no future in the Senate. Despite what Republicans seem to think, this isn’t a political game. These bills would have real-world, devastating impacts on the women and families we represent. They would mean draconian cuts to public school funding with thousands of teacher layoffs, millions of kids going hungry without nutrition assistance, moms struggling to keep their families warm without heating assistance—and more restrictions on abortion access. Put simply, these bills are an all-out attack on women and families.

“The Democratic Women’s Caucus condemns these bills, and we urge House Republicans to act immediately to avoid a government shutdown and keep programs for women and families funded. A government shutdown would be absolutely devastating for families and must be avoided at all costs. We demand that Speaker McCarthy adhere to the overwhelmingly bipartisan debt ceiling agreement and work with Democrats to advance bipartisan legislation to keep the government open.”
