CEC & DWC Leaders Call out Trump Administration Attacks on Women & LGBTQI+ Community on Title IX Anniversary
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Monday, June 23, Democratic Women’s Caucus Chair Teresa Leger Fernández (NM-03), Congressional Equality Caucus Chair Mark Takano (CA-39), and DWC Equality Caucus Liaison Julie Johnson (TX-32) released a joint statement on the 53rd anniversary of Title IX. Title IX is a vital federal law that has provided women, pregnant & parenting, and LGBTQI+ individuals with opportunities and protected them from sex-based discrimination since 1972.
“Title IX was built on the promise of equality: The promise to end all forms of sex discrimination, including by giving more opportunities to women and girls who were historically left out. The law is a critical source of support and protections for women, the LGBTQI+ community, and pregnant & parenting students, helping them thrive in schools, extracurriculars, and in their communities.
Unfortunately, in just five months in office, the Trump administration has rolled back Title IX enforcement, including measures that help students who experience sexual harassment or assault and protect LGBTQI+ kids. President Trump has not taken a single action that will strengthen Title IX or solve any of the real challenges that women, girls, and the LGBTQI+ community experience in schools, extracurriculars, and our communities. On the contrary, despite his claims to prioritize ‘protecting women,’ he spearheaded countless attacks on women and the LGBTQI+ community, including taking away rights, health care, funding, and roles in our armed forces, and undermining legal protections. At a time when the LGBTQI+ community is under attack, Trump is ending the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline’s LGBTQI+ Specialized Services. He even stripped funding and resources from the very office that enforces Title IX.
Trump’s attempt to remove protections from our laws and erase discrimination from our history books only creates further pain and inequality for people across the country. The Democratic Women’s Caucus and Congressional Equality Caucus stand united against these attacks. We’re committed to defending Title IX, the fight for equality, and the rights of every single person in this country, today and every day.”
